Synthetic zeolite catalyst plant

Synthetic zeolite catalyst plantTitaco Projects (Pty) Ltd, a BATEMAN subsidiary, has completed the construction of the SC Zeolite catalyst production facility for Süd-Chemie at Richards Bay, RSA.

This R80 million engineering, procurement, construction and management (EPCM) project, to establish a synthetic zeolite catalyst plant, commenced in April 1996 and was completed on schedule in July 1997.

Süd-Chemie’s new production facility handles a much greater throughput and a wider variety of products than the original plant, which was built in 1989 by Titaco for Süd-Chemie and the Central Energy Fund (CEF) to supply catalysts to the Mossref refinery at Mossel Bay. Since then Süd-Chemie’s commercialization of new zeolite catalysts for export for use in the production of intermediates for plastics, fibres, glues, resins, and softeners has grown to the point where a second production facility was needed.

Synthetic zeolite has a more porous structure than the natural occurring mineral, which makes it a more selective catalyst for certain chemical reactions. The pore size of the synthetic zeolites can be controlled with a precision of less than one-millionth of a millimeter. Both catalyst production plants have therefore been built for maximum flexibility to cope with the rapidly developing catalyst industry.

Titaco’s years of experience in the design and supply of extractive metallurgical plants have been augmented by its involvement in providing the SC Zeolite plant.
