Oil, gas and energy consultancy
Bateman Project Holdings Limited (BATEMAN) is expanding its consulting
services to the oil, gas and energy market with a special focus on gas
treatment and conversion. This service has considerable flexibility
in that it is independent of the usual technology suppliers.
Studies on refineries are performed using a generic refinery modelling
program, which can simulate any refining flow-sheet and predict the
capital and operating cost of a proposed plant of given operating parameters.
Several refining configurations for any oil / gas reserve may be selected
and the resulting yield, conversion efficiency, selectivity, etc. of
various product blends and quality can be estimated. The data base of
the program contains between 80 % to 90 % of all known refining operations
worldwide.
BATEMAN is currently involved in a number of such studies. An assessment
report is being produced for the Rwandan Government, via Central Energy
Fund (CEF) and RSA's Department of Foreign Affairs, on the possibility
of producing synthetic fuels in Rwanda from a unique gas deposit in
Lake Kivu.
Under contract to Soekor, the means are being developed to recover gas
associated with an offshore oil field using a floating syncrude plant
to be located on a production platform. At present this gas is being
flared at a rate of almost 10M standard cubic feet per day. Negotiations
have commenced with a number of possible licensors for the appropriate
technology.
BATEMAN has been involved in oil, gas and energy studies for over a
decade. This started in 1985 with the refeasibility study for the Mossgas
project. Since then studies have been conducted into the use of coal
liquefaction technology for the production of fuels and benzene based
chemicals from coal, the production of methane from South African coal
deposits and on a proposed vinyl chloride monomer plant. The Department
of Civil Aviation was assisted with an investigation into fuel-related
problems as a possible cause of crashes in light aircraft and the modelling
of various refinery options aimed at assessing RSA's need for a new
refinery in the short to medium term.
In 1995 a study was conducted for CEF on possible options open to Mossgas
if the FA gas field were to run out of gas much earlier than originally
expected. The study lasted 18 months and covered a wide range of topics,
including ammonia and urea production, supply of gas to the Western
Cape, optimization and cost cutting at the offshore platform and the
possible conversion of the Mossgas plant to oil and/or condensate refining.
Discussions are now under way with the Department of Trade & Industry
regarding possible consulting work in the
RSA oil industry and with one or two other clients.
