Multi-skilled special-project teams

BATEMAN has launched a new business line, Bateman Special Projects, which will undertake special projects in the minerals, mining and industrial market sectors. The concept was applied successfully during the past few years in its Small Projects unit and has been expanded to cover a wider market.

According to Dirk Schenk, General Manager, Bateman Special Projects, process-package services and facilities for a wide range of plants, unit operations and equipment are provided specifically for the operators of the smaller, more specialised, technology-driven plants in the industries which process natural resources.

"We know that the BATEMAN multi-skilling approach provides clients with many advantages in guiding their projects from concept through design, construction and installation to commissioning and ramp-up," explains Schenk.

"We optimise project manhours and costs, because we custom select lean and multi-skilled teams with small-project experience and a proven ability to tackle such projects most efficiently and effectively.

"Our special-project teams have minimal top-management structure to ensure that the projects are cost effective with low overhead costs. Projects are brought on track quickly and the involvement by the team members in the tender develops an early commitment to the success of the project.

"Finally," claims Schenk, "our goal is smooth-running projects. Only fit-for-purpose project-engineering and management systems appropriate to each project are used, proven in the successful conduct of other similar projects."

BATEMAN's special-project capability focuses on three primary market segments.

Process Plants - specifically for industries processing paper, sugar, chemicals and other natural resources. Typical processes involve leaching, refining, beneficiation, solvent extraction, electrowinning and flotation.

Acid-Production Plants - based on sulphur-burning and gas-cleaning systems. While this could involve new plants, the primary focus is on the upgrade and modernisation of existing facilities.

Environmental Systems specifically for the processing industries. BATEMAN has access to technologies for industrial wastewater treatment and gas cleaning as well as acid rock drainage.

During the past few years the concept has been applied successfully to several smaller but technically-complex projects. For Impala Platinum, the reagent plant in Rustenburg, RSA was completed and commissioned.

The design, engineering, construction and commissioning of the RK1 chrome tailings-treatment plant in Kroondal, RSA were completed for Aquarius Platinum (Africa) Corporate Services (Pty) Ltd.

The expansion of the cobalt-purification plant for Chambishi Metals PLC near Kitwe, Zambia involved the addition of a belt filter, zinc SX plant, new utilities and reagents sections and an upgrade of the existing cobalt-purification circuit.

Bateman Special Projects is currently undertaking the expansion of Multiserve's metal-from-slag recovery plant at Columbus Stainless Steel in Middelburg, RSA, on a lump-sum turnkey basis.
