Bateman electrode column for UMSL, India

BATEMAN has been awarded a contract to supply an electrode column to Utkal Manufacturing & Services Ltd (UMSL) in India for their new 27 MVA submerged-arc, high-carbon ferrochrome furnace.

UMSL, situated in the state of Orissa on the eastern coast of India, is part of the IMFA Group, which is the largest producer in India of high-carbon ferrochrome, ferrosilicon and special magnesium alloys.

The new electrode column is designed for both submerged- and open-arc furnaces and offers the following benefits: long slips and back slips can be taken as a result of long hydraulic cylinders and the slipping sequence is much faster compared to the previous electromechanical drive units.

An important part of the system is BATEMAN's new electrode-clamping device. This simple and robust device provides significant benefits, including no need for lubrication after installation and minimal maintenance; low operator involvement; minimal wear on moving parts; and much faster slipping rates for better process control, in comparison to the electromechanical units.

The lump-sum turnkey contract from UMSL comprises the design, supply and supervision of the erection and commissioning of a 1 270 mm BATEMAN electrode column, electrode holder and bustube system.

The IMFA Group is involved in a major expansion to its current 130 MVA installed furnace capacity, which will increase, over three phases, its ferrochrome production by 140 000 t/yr. The expansion involves establishing additional furnace capacity on land next to its existing industrial complex at Choudwar, Orissa and has been initiated to take advantage of the resurgence in the ferrochrome industry on the back of a strong demand, particularly in Asia.
