More praise for Skorpion dome

The dome-enclosed circular stacker/reclaimer at AngloBase's Skorpion Zinc Mine in Namibia was once again a winner when it was presented with a top 2004 global award at MINExpo in Las Vegas, USA by the international mining monthly, Mining Magazine.

The Bateman / Schade Circular Stacker / Reclaimer won the Bulk Materials Handling - Capital Equipment Category.

The awards are presented to suppliers of leading technology and recognise the finest achievers in the mining industry by rewarding truly groundbreaking innovation and technology, says Mining Magazine.

"Our winners were chosen for innovation, benefits to efficiency, productivity and safety, ease of application and their potential contribution to best practice environmental management," said Mining Magazine editor, John Chadwick, who chaired the judging panel.

"The 50 000 t Bateman / Shade circular stacker / reclaimer is totally enclosed within a 93 m diameter by 30 m high dome, which prevents stockpile dust from contaminating the surrounding area and windblown dust from contaminating the stockpile.

"The design, which was largely influenced by the sensitivity of the surrounding ecology, is the first of its kind in southern Africa. The South African engineered, detailed, fabricated and erected structure was significantly cost-effective and makes use of local material's advantages and availability.

"The remoteness of the site, the logistics of assembling on site and the programme restraints called for large elements of the stacker / reclaimer to be pre-fabricated," says Mining Magazine.

In 2003, BATEMAN's design of the massive dome structure enclosing the circular stockpile won the 'Best Entry' award in the industrial projects category of the SAISC (Southern African Institute of Steel Construction) Steel Awards, as well as recognition in the engineering machine category.
