Chrome tailings-treatment
plant for Aquarius
Bateman Africa (Pty) Ltd's small-projects team (previously
known as Tawana (Pty) Ltd) has completed the first phase of a project
for the establishment of the RKI chrome tailings-treatment plant for
Aquarius Platinum (Africa) Corporate Services (Pty) Ltd in Kroondal,
near Rustenburg, RSA. This phase involved the design, upfront engineering
and determination of the capital costs.
Feed to the RKI chrome tailings-treatment plant will be old dumps
and current tailings streams derived from the beneficiation processes
employed by neighbouring chromite mines in the Kroondal area. In addition
to generating profitable income, the clean-up of old dumps on the
Kroondal property, established during early chromite-mining activities,
further enhances Aquarius's commitment to sound environmental practice.
The cost-effectiveness of the treatment plant is increased by the
fact that the layout of the plant makes use of the slope of the land
on which the plant is to be built. This makes it possible for the
tank cell pairs to be terraced, thereby reducing the height that would
normally be required by a conventional plant. The complete plant will
therefore be built with a difference in elevation of only 1,5 m. In
addition, the plant's footprint is concentrated within an area of
20 m by 50 m.
The plant will be equipped with conventional tank-type flotation
cells and will have a capacity that will be capable of processing
newly-generated tailings from neighbouring chrome mines, as well as
the reclaimed material from the mines' existing dumps. The plant has,
however, been designed along modular lines to facilitate expansion
in the future.
The design of the plant has been accepted by the client, and construction
has commenced.
