Makwiro’s BATEMAN electrostatic precipitator refurbished

A major refurbishment to original condition of the BATEMAN-ELEX electrostatic precipitator at Zimplats’ Makwiro mine in Zimbabwe was successfully completed by BATEMAN within three months of receipt of order.

With inlet gas flow specifications of 14 775 Nm³/s at 350 °C, the precipitator was online within two months, then insulated and
commissioned after another month. The off-gas cleaning system at the mine showed no visual emissions after refurbishment and is operating well within design specifications.

The system comprises extraction ducting from the smelter arc furnace and extraction ducting from two converters, with the two ducting systems terminating tangentially in a common mixing chamber. The gas temperatures are equalised and conditioned by means of ambient-air ingress to achieve the designed precipitator-inlet temperature.

The original unit was designed and built by BATEMAN and installed by a skilled crew from South Africa within tight deadlines. BATEMAN-ELEX precipitators achieve reduced dust emission levels previously only attainable using bag-houses.
