Contract award from BHP Billiton Energy Coal South Africa Limited
Bateman Engineering is pleased to announce the award of a contract valued at approximately
ZAR348 million (US$44.6 million) from BHP Billiton Energy Coal South Africa Ltd (“BECSA”)
for the supply of two stockyards (stackers and reclaimers for run-of-mine and product coal)
as part of the coal handling infrastructure for its Douglas-Middelburg Optimisation (“DMO”)
Project located in Mpumalanga, South Africa.
The award will be undertaken as a lump-sum turnkey contract. Work is expected to
commence shortly and the project is due to be completed by first half 2010.
The DMO project scope includes utilizing reserves across the Douglas and Middelburg Mine
Services (“MMS”) collieries and development of new mining areas, with product being fed into
a new 14Mtpa coal processing plant. The project will enable BHP Billiton to maintain energy
coal exports from the combined Douglas and MMS collieries at around current levels
(approximately 9.5Mtpa BHP Billiton share) whilst also fulfilling domestic contractual
commitments.
Commenting on the award, Dr Sivi Gounden, Chief Executive Officer of Bateman Engineering,
said:
“This contract is the second award this year of a major materials handling
contract from BHP Billiton and underscores our position as a leader in the delivery
of world-class materials handling systems to the natural resources market. The
contract further cements our valued relationship with BHP Billiton and is a
significant addition to our reference list.”
